Geared Coffee Table
Geared Coffee Table
These old gears and skip tooth chain off of early 1900's era bicycles are no longer driven by pedal power. They now have been re-purposed in a lazy susan coffee table, but yet still need to be operated by man power. Spin the glass top display and the chain drives these very decorative sprockets in various directions. Each with a history and a unique story, these gears will provide conversation and entertainment in any setting.
The table frame and legs are powder coated steel with a wood inlay using wood called ipe/iron wood. The gear driven feature is back lit by remote controlled soft white LED's and can be operated via bluetooth from your smartphone or IR remote with various settings. You also have the choice of powering the lights from a cordless hidden battery pack or 120v corded power supply. The decorative glass tile is hand painted with a linear style wood grain finish. This glass mosaic is as unique as the gears and chain themselves. The table measures 64 inches long by 38 inches wide and is 18 inches tall.
The gears and chain come from American bicycles dating back to the early 1900's. Some of the brands and models are now highly sought after by collectors. One chain ring is from a Shelby bicycle. The Shelby cycle company from Ohio, produced bicycles from 1925 to 1953. They also produced a bicycle in 1928 with a Charles Lindbergh theme called the "Lindy Flyer", and they were responsible for the Donald Duck bicycles in the 1950's. You will also see a chain ring off a bicycle called the Firestone Fleetwood. This was a pre war era bike with an art deco styling and considered a masterpiece of a bicycle . This bike was produced in 1937 and came fully loaded with options like a torpedo shaped head light, leather Mesinger seat, and of course Firestone white walled tires. Another chain ring in the table is off a bicycle that was used by the US military in WW2. The Columbia bike, produced by the Columbia Manufacturing company out of Hartford Connecticut. This was the first American bicycle company dating back to the 1870's. The bike was later used by US servicemen to get around on bases and deliver messages. Some were designed to be used by paratroopers to get around quickly on the battlefield as soon as they landed. The bike was folded up on the back of paratroopers to provide instant mobility on the battlefield. I have included some pictures of the original ads used to sell these bike. The Schwinn company promoting to buy war bonds and support the US army and navy, also Captian Kangaroo promoting his favorite bike.
All this interesting history of these bicycles can now be displayed in your living room, office, or retail space. This table is made to order and each has several options. Please specify what features and options prior to purchase. For example, wood choice and stain color, glass mosaic choices, and LED options. Note that the style of gears will vary on stock available at the time of purchase and the battery pack used to power the LED lights has a lifespan of 10 or less running hours.
